Sunday Snippet – Body of Work – Fresh Meat
Welcome. It’s Sunday snippet time, part of the Weekend Writing Warriors meme. Click that link to read all of the weekly offerings. 🙂
Today’s snippet is from BODY OF WORK, and it’s the beginning of one of my favorite parts of the book — I fell head over heels for Brian’s brother, Ian, the moment he appeared on the page. I would love to write a book for him one day.
“Hey, pretty boy,” Brian called to his brother as he leaned out of the Jeep. “Got any meat here?” It was a running joke. Two years Ian had lived here and he’d never bothered to take down the old meat packer’s sign. At least once a week, somebody banged on his door looking to buy a side of beef or a pig for spit-roasting.
“You’re in luck, you ugly bastard.” Ian flicked a cigarette butt to the pavement while sauntering to the Jeep. “Fresh meat just rolled in.”

I like the blunt, yet brutish dialogue exchange. I get a sense of their personalities. Nice 8!

Nice touch with the meat packing sign. Very clever. I live in a rural area, and there are a lot of places like that. Adds realism of everyday life to the story.

Great use of the 8! I’d wondered when Ian was introduced if he was going to get his OWN book (not hinting or anything!). Well done!
Sarah Cass
LOL. Definitely sounds like two brothers bantering! Love it.

I love good banter between guys (especially brothers). Interesting note about the sign. After the first time someone banged on my door, you better believe I’d have torn it down. Makes me wonder why he hasn’t.
Veronica Scott
So like a guy to leave the darn sign up, just for the sheer joke of it! Loved the snippet, can’t wait to read more.
Lauren Smith
Love the dialogue and the way you worked in details here. It’s so funny too!

That was a fun exchange. I can already understand why you like him.

I like Ian already:D
Emilie Poissenot (Aheila)
8 sentences and I care about them both. The details of both the world and their complicity makes them real and endearing.

Don’t tease Karla. Loved Ian
Millie Burns
Absolutely how brothers talk to each other! This made me smile!
Caitlin
Nice sibling humor. And a good way to underscore the usual differences between genders. I can’t imagine leaving that sign up so long…
Beth Matthews
Nice detail with the sign. And the brothers seem like real brothers. 🙂

Why doesn’t he remove the “meat packer’s sign”? Or is it a way to meet new people?
Lynn Crain
I really love this snippet. Makes me laugh. And I’d want to write a book about the brother as well.

Great dialogue – really gives a sense of their relationship.
